Gallicas are the oldest of all Old Garden roses, and their influence can be seen in nearly every Old Garden rose variety to this day. Originally cultivated by the Greeks and Romans, and later refined by the Dutch and French, Gallicas are named in honor of their historical roots. These roses bloom in a range of colors, from soft pinks, reds, and purples to deep crimson reds with striking stripes. The flowers can be single, double, or semi-double and are often found in clusters of three, though some varieties may have solitary blooms. The bushes are compact, suckering shrubs with oval, dark green foliage that is pointed and slightly rough in texture. These roses require minimal care and thrive even in poor, gravelly soils.
